Eek! Week: A "Dynamite" '80s Halloween (includes free printable!)

To kick off this Halloween-themed blog week, I thought I would reach into my stash of hoarded childhood memories. If you grew up in the 1970s or '80s like I did, you most likely remember Dynamite magazine, which you could buy through the Scholastic Book Club at school. Here are some Halloween covers from the Dynamite collection, along with a poster and a Halloween monster quiz book. Plus, a sneak peek at the hottest Halloween masks for 1980!

Now, if you need some Halloween décor, don't go batty! Here's an activity from an old issue of Dynamite. Click on the image and a printable PDF version will appear. Just print it on card stock (as many times as you like, for multiple bats), and assemble according to the instructions! Wha ha ha!

Waaaa! Someone who remembers not only Dynamite magazine, but also their Halloween issues! Perhaps you can put me out of my thirty+ year misery and remind me which issue (bonus points for volume numbers or month and date too) of Dynamite magazine featured the retro-style Glow-In-The-Dark Halloween stickers? I had those when I was a kid and absolutely loved them to bits. I had them up all year long (much to the frustration of my parents) and the served as a sort of night-light for me. see, I was terribly afraid of the dark then, but thought that their spooky glow would help to scare the monsters away. Kid logic, I guess.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, and happy Halloween to you.

Hi Zdes'! Thanks for your comment! I have such a sentimental attachment to Dynamite, and have been working for years on getting a complete collection. I used to think I was the only one who cared about or remembered them, until eBay came along and it seems like everyone wants them. Unfortunately I'm not sure exactly which issue has the glow-in-the-dark stickers. None of the ones I have include them, however I do have several incomplete issues, and the bonus stuff wasn't always listed in the contents.

Did you know Scholastic has a Dynamite Facebook page? (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dynamite-Magazine/156042867800932) I'm wondering if maybe you made a comment on the page if someone would respond???

OK, now check this out: http://magikalseasons.blogspot.com/2011/04/glow-in-dark-halloween-graphics.html

Are these the stickers?! I noticed this blogger says they are copyright 1977, so my guess would be that they came from either issue #40 (September 1977 with Farrah Fawcett on the cover), or issue #41 (October 1977, with Shaun Cassidy and Parker Stevenson, aka the Hardy Boys, on the cover). Maybe the blogger could tell you which issue she found them stuck to... ;-)

I hope this is the sheet you've been looking for, and that perhaps you can find the issue complete with the sticker sheet. Good luck!

Thank YOU for checking out my blog and sharing your memories! Happy Halloween!

Amy
